I reached out to the FaceBook and Twitter world for food recommendations while we spend a few days in the Bend area, and received several responses. One that intrigued me was the Tumalo Feed Company, a small restaurant I noticed just a few miles up the road from our RV site. Looking to be an old-fashioned western steak house, I decided to give it a try.
One thing you should know, this Fat Boy loves his steak, and I am particularly fond of my father's favorite, the New York Strip. I have had steak in many fine and not so fine establishments over the years, so I hoped this would be a better than average experience.
I ordered a 14oz Grass Fed New York strip, and it came juicy and tender as any steak I've ever had. Cooked to a perfect medium-rare and lightly seasoned, the flavor of the meat was all that lasted on the palate. I ordered it with ranch style beans, fried potatoes, and Mac & Cheese. The beans were good in the Texas style, what some places would call chili or ranch beans. Nice chunks of meat add flavor, but there was none of the sweet tang that some consider steak house beans. The Mac and cheese was good, but the sauce was a bit thin. The fried potatoes were cooked through, but lacked flavor. The sides in all were ok, but not a highlight.
My daughter had the taco-salad, and her assessment was better than good but not amazing. My 16yo son had the 11oz New York strip and was as happy with his choice as I was.
Carrie ordered the steak burger, a 1/2 pound burger made from the trimmings of their steaks. It was well seasoned and juicy an was happy with her choice, which proved more than she could finish.
In all it was a great meal, and if you find yourself looking for a great steak while in the Bend area you could not do better than the Tumalo Feed Company. This steak was a huge hunk of Fat Boy Heaven.
