In September of 2013 an idea popped up on Kickstarter that got my attention: Foodie Dice. The concept was to turn meal preparation into a game. You have nine dice which indicate protein, cooking method, grain/carb, herb, bonus ingredient + spring, summer, fall, or winter veggies. This gives you over 186,000 combinations to jog your creativity in the kitchen.
As someone who cooks all the time for this website, another way to come up with new ideas for recipes intrigued me, and this had the possibility of turning it into something I can involve the family in more as well. We will have nights where one of the kids or my wife get to roll the dice and help me plan the meal based on their rolls. Going forward, when this is the way the recipe is picked, I will include a picture of the dice that are rolled to show you all.
My dice arrived this week, and I am very happy with the quality. The wood is very nicely finished, and the laser engraving is beautifully done. The tumbler that was up cycled from a wine bottle is finished off nicely without any rough edges. In all it is well made, and looks nice enough to remain in the open on a shelf in my kitchen so it is easily at hand.
Now that the Kickstarter campaign has ended Two Tumbleweeds, the company behind Foodie Dice has launched their own website where you can order your own set, and they have booster sets available which include dice for vegetarian proteins, desserts, wildcard ingredients, and spices to further vary your recipe. Their products and more information can be found at Foodie Dice.
