This week I was sent this Microwave Rice Cooker from Sistema, and we decided to give it a try tonight. The cooker claims to save more than half of the cooking time for steamed rice, and anything that reduces prep time in my kitchen is a good thing.

Nothing says fall like a big bowl of rich and creamy Tomato soup
One of the things I look forward to all summer is the start of Fall and all of the rich and warming soups that it brings around our house. I particularly love a nice tomato soup with grilled cheese sandwiches. The combination of the tart tomatoes and rich creamy cheddar cheese are one of the ways I define comfort foods feel.

The new Kindle Fire HDX features full 1080P HDAmazon today has announced the latest in their Kindle line of tablets, the Kindle Fire HDX 7"
Amazon is also adding a new feature to the HDX line, something they are calling the "Mayday Button". Pressing this button will connect you to a live video chat with support personell and gives them the ability to see your Kindle's screen and even draw on it like a telestrator to show you exactly where to touch. Not a new concept in support, but definately new to the tablet world.
In all this new offering looks amazing, and as always I'll be recieving a unit on launch day to review. Stay tuned, this should be good.
Beef, Bourbon, and Beer.....how can that go wrong?
Bourbon Heritage Month is nearing an end, but how can you go wrong on a blustery Oregon fall day with a nice thick beef stew. With nothing better to do with my time than craft this today in between laundry, shopping, reviewing electronics, beta testing and reporting on the results, and helping our daughter with her school work I decided to take the time and do this right.

Growing up my Dad did a version of this with plain white bread instead of french. He called it quick soufflé and it was always a favorite.
When I was a kid we had a tight budget. Like "we're broke until payday and that's next week" poor. One of the ways Dad used to stretch out food from the pantry was a variation on this recipe that he would make with all of the stale bread that was left at the end of the month. While I don't need to stretch my grocery budget that far anymore, I decided to give this a try made the way I always dreamed of eating it as a kid.

OK, I've had a chance to rest a bit after leaving at 2am to line up for the iPhone 5S release, and was fortunate to come away with a new phone!
As major news sites have reported, supplies are severely limited for this thing at launch, with internet sales being pushed out 7-21 days within hours of its availability.
At the AT&T store I picked again this year, supplies were very low. Silver and Gold versions, as well as the largest 64GB variants were not available at all.
New shipments should be coming in regularly from now on, but don't expect to walk into a store and find one this weekend.
So far I have been very impressed by the speed if the new A7 processor, and have had no problems with the fingerprint reader used to unlock the new phone.
Benchmark tests have been run by all of the major Tech blogs, with the most thorough testing as always done by anandtech. This phone is faster than any other phone on the market, easily blowing away the competition from the Android set, including the former leader, Samsung's international G IV.
If you already have an iPhone 5 you will notice the speed immediately, and if you are still using a 4 or 4S, run to the nearest store that has this phone in stock.
Few things are better on a cold and rainy night than a nice steaming hot pot roast.
I knew I wanted beef for dinner tonight, so I put up a survey on our FaceBook page last night, and Pot Roast beat out Beef Stew by a landslide. I love pot roast because a crock-pot makes it one of the easiest meals to prepare, and if you do it even close to correctly it is moist, tender, and delicious.

Bourbon Heritage Month continues with a bourbon and sour cherry glazed meatloaf
Bourbon Heritage Month has had me looking for creative new ways to use bourbon in my cooking this month, and I decided that I was in the mood for meatloaf when I woke up this morning. I didn't know how I was going to tie the two together until I realized I could do a nice glaze with bourbon instead of the standard ketchup fair I grew up with.

Following up on the amazing success of their first Minecraft Lego project last year, the films at Mojang have worked with Lego to release two new sets this year: The Village and The Nether.
Minecraft goods are huge, and gaining in popularity every day, so these should be a big hit if they can keep them in stock this holiday season.
Each set contains 488 pieces and instructions. The benefit of these sets is they include blocks not in the original set which will allow Minecraft pros to re-create areas of their own worlds more easily.

I was looking for dinner ideas for the week and stumbled across this article at Serious Eats. Now as you all should know if you've been visiting this site for any length of time, I LOVE grits. One of the things that has stuck with me from my time spent in the south (along with a love for sweet tea, bourbon, and gulf shrimp). Shrimp and Grits would be dinner every Friday night in my house if I didn't have this website to write (and my kids didn't revolt at the mention of shrimp). This new way of changing it up by adding salsa and serving it in a taco caught my attention, and I am glad it did.

Starting this month Goodies Co. is sending out a second box of samples focusing on healthy snacks for kids.
Goodies Co. started a monthly subscription service a few months ago which sends members sample (and often full-sized) packages of new snacks coming to market for review. They have expanded that service this month with a second subscription for kids, focusing on healthy snacks.
Most of the snacks in this months box were gluten free, which is fine for fruit snacks but didn't work as well in the chocolate chip cookies or graham crackers. I know kids who are allergic to wheat won't know what they are missing, but for the rest of us gluten-free cookies will always be a difficult sell.
